Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Business and Management Scientists Ranking is primarily based on data aggregated from comprehensive bibliometric databases, including OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable sources. The bibliometric data employed to derive citation-based metrics were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the ranking reflects the most recent and relevant scholarly contributions. A researcher’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively considers a researcher’s publications and citation impact within the specified discipline of Business and Management. This approach allows for a precise evaluation of disciplinary influence and productivity.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from diverse bibliometric data sources across all academic disciplines. Among those, 3,016 scientists were specifically identified in the field of Business and Management. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a researcher’s D-index had to be at least 30, with a majority of their key publications situated within the Business and Management domain. Additionally, a scientist’s awards and achievements pertinent to Business and Management were factored into the evaluation process.
The D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 depending on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, while ensuring that the top 1% of leading experts are represented in the listing. Furthermore, to maintain alignment between general scholarly influence and discipline-specific excellence, only scientists whose general H-index differs from their D-index by 30% or less were considered.
Verification Practices and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team performed manual verification of all scientist profiles. These profiles were carefully cross-referenced against publications listed in a broad array of trusted sources, enhancing the reliability and validity of the ranking. Although not directly influencing the final ranking position, the volume of publications in leading journals and conference proceedings serves as an important secondary indicator of a researcher’s contribution to the discipline.
The ranking positions themselves are established according to each researcher's D-index, derived from robust and widely recognized bibliometric repositories, OpenAlex and CrossRef — the foremost databases available to the scholarly community for citation tracking and publication metadata.
