Overview

Modul University Vienna is known as Austria’s premier international private university, located in the world’s top city for quality of living, Vienna. Founded in 1908, Modul University or MU represents over a hundred years of Viennese excellence in education. It was originally established as the School of Restaurant, Hotel and Coffee House Studies, considered the oldest vocational school for tourism in the world. In 2007, a year before celebrating its centenary, it was renamed MU Vienna.

Guided by its organizational vision of “expanding horizons,” MU has continued its long tradition of tourism and hospitality education, and gradually expanded its offerings to include innovative education in areas such as sustainable development, new media technology, tourism and hospitality management, and international management. It considers itself a globally-focused university for research and education on tourism, with a forward-looking focus to meet the needs and to guarantee the welfare of today’s and the future’s generation.

By 1975, MU operated mainly in its Kupferberg campus, a hilly suburban area of Wienerwald overlooking Vienna. In 2016, MU founded a second campus in Dubai. In the same year, reaching around two-thirds of its student population, called Modulians, are international students. Later, it partnered with China’s Nanjing University to offer English-language academic courses in tourism and hospitality.

According to Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020, MU belongs to the 101–200th in “Impact Rankings” in two criteria: providing decent work and economic growth and responsible consumption and production.

Vienna is famous worldwide for its deeply-rooted legacy in music, with famous classical composers like Mozart and Beethoven who considered the city their home.

To ensure a holistic international education, foreign MU students commence their studies with a semester-long “Foundation Program,” which offers students the basic preparation for a seamless transition into any of its bachelor programs as well as for a smooth adjustment into living in Vienna. It also prepares expatriate students to gain a working proficiency level in Mathematics and English and achieve good exposure to the basic aspects of Economics, Geography, and Business Administration.

Modul University Vienna is an accredited institution of higher learning by the UN's World Tourism Organization, while its MBA program is accredited by the Association of MBAs of the United Kingdom. MU is also known for its annual publication, European City Markets Benchmark Report, considered as one of the top sources of tourism statistical data.
