An institution’s position in the ranking is determined by the sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking scholars affiliated with that university or research institution. The D-index considered for this purpose includes exclusively an individual’s publications and citation data within the examined discipline. However, researchers from all major scientific fields were included to reflect the true breadth of academic output across institutions.
Scope of Research Considered
The scope of the 2024 edition covers a comprehensive evaluation of academic excellence. In total, 279,971 scientist profiles were identified and assessed across all major scientific disciplines, drawing from a broad array of bibliometric data sources. To ensure meaningful contributions, each scientist had to meet a minimum qualifying D-index threshold of 20.
Beyond citation metrics, notable awards and achievements within each scientist's field of study were also taken into account during the selection process, to better highlight exceptional and impactful researchers.
Verification and Quality Assurance Practices
Research.com places a high value on the integrity and credibility of its rankings. The researchers behind this initiative recognize that raw bibliometric data are not absolute tools for evaluating scientific output. As such, every scientist profile included in the ranking was also manually verified, with data cross-correlated against publications found in numerous trustworthy and established sources.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the Research.com ranking, it does provide a valuable secondary signal of their contribution to advancing knowledge within their specific scientific area.
Ultimately, the position in the ranking is determined using each researcher’s H-index, calculated based on data from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
