The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Immunology Scientists in Japan Ranking is primarily informed by data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, alongside multiple other reputable bibliometric sources. These comprehensive datasets enable the construction of a robust citation-based metric framework. All bibliometric data utilized for the compilation of the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A researcher’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively incorporates papers and citation metrics pertinent to the examined discipline, thereby ensuring an accurate reflection of impact specifically within Immunology.
Scope and Inclusion Criteria
This ranking is based on an extensive examination of 187,135 scientist profiles drawn from various bibliometric databases covering all scientific disciplines. Within this broad corpus, 185 scientists specializing in Immunology were assessed. To qualify for this ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 40, with the majority of their tier publications focused on Immunology. In addition, awards and recognized achievements in the field were considered as supporting factors.
The D-index threshold is carefully calibrated in increments of 10, depending on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach ensures a consistent emphasis on excellence while incorporating approximately the top 1% of leading scholars in Immunology. Furthermore, there is a controlled proximity of no more than 30% difference allowed between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index to maintain discipline-specific relevance and rigor.
Verification and Validation Procedures
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output and impact. Therefore, all scientist profiles included in the ranking have undergone manual verification and cross-correlation against publications documented in a broad array of trustworthy and established sources. While the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence the ranking position, it is regarded as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to their field.
The final position of each researcher is determined using their D-index, computed from the information curated primarily via OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most authoritative and widely utilized bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
