Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Psychology Scientists in Australia Ranking is primarily constructed using bibliometric data derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources. These platforms are among the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community. The citation-based metrics that form the core of this ranking were systematically collected on January 12, 2026. A researcher’s position in the ranking is determined by their discipline-specific research impact, as measured by the D-index (Discipline H-index). This metric considers only the publications and citation counts pertinent to the examined discipline, providing a focused evaluation of contribution within Psychology.
Ranking Scope and Eligibility Criteria
The ranking was derived from an extensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a range of bibliometric data sources spanning all academic disciplines. Within this broad dataset, 650 scientists specializing in Psychology were specifically evaluated. To qualify for inclusion in the Psychology ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 30, with the additional requirement that the majority of their tier-listed publications be within the field of Psychology. Furthermore, awards and notable achievements specifically associated with Psychology were considered as part of the qualitative assessment process.
The D-index threshold is strategically set in increments of 10 relative to the estimated scholar population size in each discipline. This approach ensures that the ranking accurately reflects the top 1% of leading scholars in the field. Additionally, to maintain disciplinary focus, the proximity between a scientist’s overall H-index and their Psychology-specific D-index must be within 30%, supporting the relevance of their research activity to the discipline.
Verification and Validation Practices
We recognize that raw bibliometric data cannot serve as an absolute or sole measure of scholarly output and impact. Accordingly, each scientist profile included in this ranking underwent a thorough manual verification process. This comprehensive review involved cross-correlating publication records against multiple trustworthy sources to confirm the validity and accuracy of the data.
While not directly affecting the ranking position, the quantity of a researcher’s publications in high-impact journals and prominent conference proceedings is considered an important secondary indicator of their influence and contribution to Psychology research. Importantly, the ranking is established exclusively based on the D-index calculated from data provided by OpenAlex and CrossRef, both of which offer robust and transparent bibliometric data.
