Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in United States Ranking is grounded in comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources. These databases provide extensive and up-to-date citation data essential for the construction of citation-based metrics. The bibliometric dataset used to devise the ranking metrics was collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring a current and detailed reflection of research impact.
A scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their Discipline H-index, or D-index, which specifically accounts for publications and citation metrics within the field of Medicine. This specialized index allows for a focused assessment of scholarly influence confined to the discipline under review, thus providing a more relevant and accurate measure of expertise and impact in Medicine.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking draws from an extensive pool of 188,153 scientist profiles identified across diverse bibliometric data sources spanning all academic disciplines. From this population, 10,020 profiles specifically associated with Medicine were examined in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the Medicine ranking, a scientist’s D-index was required to be at least 70, reflecting a significant level of scholarly output and citation influence within the discipline. Additionally, a majority of their tier publications needed to be classified under the Medicine domain.
Beyond bibliometric thresholds, awards and notable achievements in the field of Medicine were also considered as qualitative indicators of a researcher’s standing. The D-index threshold is dynamically calibrated in increments of 10, depending on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach ensures that the ranking reliably captures the top 1% of leading scholars in Medicine, while maintaining a proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index to preserve focus on specialized expertise.
Additional Verification Practices
Understanding that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the nuance or quality of scholarly contributions, the Research.com team conducted thorough manual verifications of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. These were cross-correlated against publications listed in a wide range of authoritative and trustworthy sources to confirm accuracy and authenticity of the research output attributed to each profile.
While the number of papers published in esteemed journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor influencing rank position, it constitutes a valuable secondary signal reflecting a scientist’s contribution to advancing research in Medicine.
The final ranking is established using each researcher’s D-index calculated from data obtained through OpenAlex and CrossRef, the leading and most trusted bibliometric databases available to the research community.
