Bibliometric data for devising the citation-based metrics utilized in this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only publications and citation data relevant to the examined discipline—in this case, Medicine—providing a focused measure of impact within the field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking examines a total of 188,153 scientist profiles identified from diverse bibliometric sources spanning all academic disciplines. Within this universe, 731 scientists specialized in Medicine were closely evaluated for inclusion in the Medicine-specific ranking.
To qualify for the ranking, scientists were required to have a D-index of at least 70, ensuring a high standard of discipline-specific scholarly impact. Additionally, the majority of their tier publications had to be within the scope of Medicine. Awards and notable achievements in Medicine further contributed to consideration.
The D-index threshold was intelligently set in increments of 10, aligned with the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, guaranteeing representation of the top 1% of leading researchers in the field. Another qualifying factor required that the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index remain within 30%, ensuring alignment and relevance of their overall impact with their discipline-specific contributions.
Verification and Validation Processes
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output or quality, all scientist profiles were meticulously and manually verified. This process included cross-correlation of individual publication records against a wide array of trustworthy sources to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
While the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor influencing a researcher’s position in this ranking, it remains a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contributions to their research domain.
The final ranking is determined exclusively through each researcher’s D-index calculated from data compiled via OpenAlex and CrossRef. Both databases are rigorously maintained and represent the most reliable bibliometric resources currently accessible for this type of analysis.
