Overview
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a prestigious private global research university based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It consists of seven independent schools and colleges, all offering interdisciplinary programs, such as the College of Engineering, Mellon College of Science and School of Computer Science. The others include Tepper School of Business, College of Fine Arts, Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy, and Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The most popular majors chosen at Carnegie Mellon University include Engineering, Business, Marketing, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services, as well as Interdisciplinary Studies. The diversity comes from the aforementioned seven schools and colleges. As such, CMU offers undergraduate programs as well as masters and doctoral for a graduate degree. The university is also selective of its students with an acceptance rate of 15%.
Carnegie Mellon University is a product of the merging of Carnegie Technical Schools and the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research in 1967. The schools were founded by the philanthropist and industrialist Andrew Carnegie who aimed to establish a vocational center for the children of blue-collar people of Pittsburgh in 1900. The Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, on the other hand, was founded by banker and industrialist brothers Richard and Andrew Mellon in 1913.
CMU is also home to past and present distinguished alumni and faculty members. The university has 20 Nobel Prize laureates, 23 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 47 Tony Award laureates, and 124, Emmy Award winners under its belt. Aside from those, CMU has also produced 10 Academy Award winners, 13 Turing Award winners, and 22 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The university offers various conventional housing options for its students, including coeducational, special interest, and single-gender. First-year students are given three options for housing—standard, apartment-style, and prime. Compared to them, upperclassmen have more options for student housing. For instance, one- or two-bedroom apartments and townhouses are available to them.
Carnegie Mellon is also known for its variety of unique traditions with some being over a century old. One of the earliest ones is called The Fence, which was built in 1923. It is used for advertising accomplishments and events or displaying poignant or witty messages. There is also the Mobot (mobile robot) annual competition, Kiltie Band where the marching and concert band wears kilts, and buggy races.
