Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Social Sciences and Humanities Scientists in Belgium Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from leading academic databases including OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reputable data repositories. The citation-based metrics used to evaluate and position scientists in this ranking were collected as of January 12, 2026. A fundamental metric underpinning the ranking is the D-index (Discipline H-index), which specifically focuses on a researcher's publications and citation impact within the examined discipline, thereby ensuring a discipline-targeted and precise assessment of scholarly influence.
Scope and Selection Criteria
To construct the ranking, a broad pool of 279,971 scientist profiles spanning all disciplines were analyzed, from which a focused subset of 92 scientists specializing in Social Sciences and Humanities was identified. Eligibility for inclusion required that a scientist’s D-index be at least 30, ensuring recognition of sustained scholarly impact within their discipline. Additionally, the majority of tier publications considered needed to fall within the Social Sciences and Humanities domain to guarantee disciplinary relevance. Recognitions such as awards and academic achievements specifically within Social Sciences and Humanities were also taken into consideration as supplementary indicators of excellence.
The D-index thresholds for acknowledging top researchers are dynamically set in increments of 10 according to the estimated population size of scholars in each discipline. This method guarantees the inclusion of approximately the top 1% of leading scholars per field. Another critical quality control measure involved ensuring a proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index, maintaining alignment between global and discipline-focused scholarly impact.
Verification and Quality Assurance
Understanding the limitations of raw bibliometric data as absolute evaluative tools, the researchers responsible for this ranking conducted rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-correlated with publications indexed in a broad range of trustworthy, authoritative sources to confirm accuracy and relevance. While the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings was not used as a direct ranking factor, this metric serves as a valuable secondary signal, highlighting a scientist’s contribution and participation in high-impact research forums.
The position of each researcher in the ranking is ultimately established using their D-index derived from data aggregated via OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent, well-curated, and widely respected bibliometric databases accessible to the research community today.
