Data Sources and Metrics Basis
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Microbiology Scientists in Canada Ranking is founded on comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, alongside multiple other reputable data sources within the research ecosystem. The bibliometric information, including citation-based metrics critical for the ranking, was systematically collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a robust metric that selectively incorporates publications and citation counts strictly within the examined discipline of Microbiology. This ensures that the evaluation is both focused and representative of a researcher’s impact in their specialized field.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking was constructed by examining a broad dataset encompassing 187,659 scientist profiles across all disciplines, from which 162 scientists specializing specifically in Microbiology were identified and analyzed. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index must be at least 40, and a majority of their tier publications need to be within the Microbiology domain. Furthermore, consideration was given to scientists’ awards and achievements specifically related to Microbiology, adding an important qualitative dimension to the evaluation.
The threshold for the D-index is systematically adjusted in increments of 10 relative to the estimated size of the scholar population within each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading researchers in the field are consistently incorporated. Additionally, a maximum proximity of 30% between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index is required, ensuring alignment between overall research impact and discipline-focused expertise.
Additional Verification Practices
We acknowledge that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scientific output and quality. Therefore, all scientist profiles included in the ranking have been manually verified and cross-correlated against publications listed in a wide range of trusted external sources. While the ranking position itself is exclusively determined by the D-index—calculated using data from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the foremost and most reputable bibliometric databases accessible to the research community—the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings has been considered as a valuable secondary signal of a researcher’s contribution within Microbiology.
