A scientist's position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined bibliometric indicator that considers only publications and citation counts within the specific discipline under examination—in this case, Medicine. This approach ensures that the ranking accurately reflects a researcher's influence and contributions within their specialized field rather than considering general impact across unrelated disciplines.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking examines a comprehensive dataset consisting of 188,153 scientist profiles aggregated from diverse bibliometric sources across all academic disciplines. From this vast pool, 221 scientists specializing specifically in Medicine were analyzed for this ranking edition.
To qualify for inclusion, a scientist’s D-index needed to be at least 70, ensuring that only highly impactful researchers are considered. Additionally, a majority of their tier publications had to be directly associated with Medicine, which was assessed through an in-depth evaluation of publication venues and content. Beyond bibliometric thresholds, scientists’ awards and professional achievements within the field of Medicine were also carefully evaluated to provide a more holistic view of their standing.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers is adjusted in increments of 10, corresponding to the estimated size of the scholar population in each discipline, while ensuring that the top 1% of leading scholars are represented in the final list. Furthermore, to maintain discipline specificity, a proximity criterion is applied such that the difference between a researcher’s general H-index and their Medicine-specific D-index does not exceed 30%.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing the limitations inherent in relying solely on raw bibliometric data, the Research.com team undertook rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. This process involved cross-correlating publication records against a broad range of authoritative sources to confirm accuracy and integrity of data. Such meticulous validation helps mitigate common issues like misattribution and data inconsistencies.
Although not directly factored into the ranking position, the quantity of papers published in leading journals and prominent conference proceedings was considered an important secondary indicator of each scientist's contribution to their specific area of research.
The final ranking positions are established based on each researcher’s D-index, derived from data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, recognized as two of the most prominent and reliable bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
