A scientist's position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that includes only the publications and citation metrics relevant to the specific discipline under examination—in this case, Medicine. By focusing exclusively on discipline-specific scholarship, the D-index provides a precise measure of impact within the targeted field.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking was devised through a rigorous examination of 188,153 scientist profiles identified from a diverse array of bibliometric data sources spanning all academic disciplines. Within the realm of Medicine, the ranking specifically focuses on the top 250 scientists based on their D-index performance.
To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a scientist’s D-index was required to be at least 70, ensuring recognition of truly impactful researchers. Furthermore, a majority of each qualifying scientist’s tier publications had to be within the domain of Medicine, reflecting a clear disciplinary focus. Additional consideration was given to relevant awards and other significant achievements within the medical field.
The threshold for the D-index is incrementally adjusted in steps of 10 for different disciplines, proportionally aligned with the total estimated number of scholars in each area while ensuring that the top 1% of leading researchers are encompassed in the ranking. An additional criterion maintains that a scientist’s overall general H-index should not deviate from their discipline-specific D-index by more than 30%, preserving consistency in scholarly impact within their specialization.
Verification and Data Integrity
Recognizing the limitations inherent to raw bibliometric data as an absolute measure of scientific output, the Research.com team has implemented meticulous manual verification procedures for all included scientist profiles. Each profile was carefully cross-referenced against publications indexed in a broad spectrum of trusted academic journals and databases to validate accuracy and ensure authentic representation of each researcher’s contributions.
While the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking position, it serves as an important secondary indicator of scholarly contribution within Medicine. Ultimately, the ranking position is anchored in each scientist’s validated D-index as calculated from data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most distinguished and widely respected bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
