Overview

The University of Michigan (UMich) is the oldest university in the state and is also known as one of the founding members of the Association of American Universities. Classified as an R1: Doctoral University, the public research institution is known for its high research volume. It also offers free tuition to families whose incomes fall below $65,000 and tuition support to those who earn just a little more.

UMich offers 250 degree programs in its 19 colleges and schools. Among these, the most popular ones are economics, business administration and management, computer engineering, computer and information services, and experimental psychology. It also offers highly regarded doctorate degrees in social sciences, humanities, technology, engineering, and mathematics as well as professional programs for business, law, architecture, medicine, and dentistry.

With Ann Arbor as its flagship campus, UMich has other campuses in Dearborn, Flint, and Detroit. Ann Arbor spans 780 acres with well over 500 buildings. It has its own medical facility that provides outpatient care and surgery. On the research front, the university has one of the biggest budgets dedicated to college-based research in the United States. It has made major contributions to the fields of medicine, engineering, and technology. Furthermore, the National Election Studies, which runs surveys and studies on voters, and the Correlates of War project, which centers on warfare history, are located in the school.

UMich has an expansive library system that contains more than 13 million volumes. Given the abundance of research material, the university used to host the knowledge base of JSTOR.

Founded in 1817, UMich predates Michigan’s establishment as a state by 20 years. 40 acres of land was apportioned by Ann Arbor thinking that it would become the capital of the new state, but, when Lansing was selected as the capital, the land was turned into the site for what would become UMich. In 1841, the university held its first classes attended by seven students and two educators.

Now, the institution is home to more than 45,000 students, over 6,000 teachers, and more than 18,000 administrative staff. It has come a long way, especially in the research field, as it has been affiliated with more than 20 Nobel laureates, over 50 MacArthur awardees, and a slew of Turing and Fields Medal award winners. The university’s notable alumni include Gerald Ford (US president), Sanjay Gupta (neurosurgeon), James Earl Jones (actor), Tom Brady (American football player), and Rick Snyder (Michigan governor).

UMich intends to mold its learners through creation, communication, and the preservation and application of knowledge as vessels for challenging present norms and enriching future standards. The school also takes athletics seriously, being a part of the Big Ten Conference. Lastly, UMich has produced more than 140 Olympic medal winners.
