W. E. Spicer was affiliated with Stanford University in the United States during their academic career. Their work in physics was recognized through several honors and fellowships, reflecting their contributions to the scientific community.
Spicer received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize from the American Physical Society in 1980. This award acknowledged their role in the development and application of photoelectron spectroscopy as a significant technique for investigating the electronic structure of solids, both in bulk materials and at surfaces.
In addition to this award, Spicer was named a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1978. They had been recognized earlier as a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1967 and as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1966.
