The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Animal Science and Veterinary Scientists in the United States Ranking is primarily derived from comprehensive bibliometric data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources. The citation-based metrics used for this ranking were collected as of January 12, 2026. Central to the ranking methodology is the Discipline H-index (D-index), a refined bibliometric indicator that evaluates a researcher's academic output and influence exclusively within the domain of Animal Science and Veterinary. This focus ensures that the ranking reflects a scientist's impact specifically in the examined discipline rather than their general citation profile.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
Our initial dataset comprised 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a range of bibliometric databases spanning all scientific disciplines. From this extensive collection, 891 scientists specializing in Animal Science and Veterinary disciplines were identified for detailed consideration. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist must have achieved a minimum D-index of 20 and have the majority of their tiered publications concentrated within the Animal Science and Veterinary fields. Additionally, recognized awards and notable achievements in the discipline were factored into the evaluation process.
The threshold for the D-index to be considered among top researchers varies in increments of 10, calibrated according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars in Animal Science and Veterinary are systematically incorporated into the ranking. Furthermore, to ensure relevance and disciplinary focus, a scientist's general H-index and D-index must be within a maximum proximity difference of 30%.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully encapsulate the scholarly contributions and impact of researchers. Accordingly, all scientist profiles were manually verified and cross-correlated with publications documented across a wide spectrum of trustworthy academic sources. While the positioning in the ranking is determined solely by the D-index based on OpenAlex and CrossRef data—the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases available—secondary indicators such as the number of publications in prestigious journals and conference proceedings serve as valuable supplementary signals of a scientist's influence and contribution.
