A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized metric that focuses exclusively on papers and citation impact within the examined discipline of Social Sciences and Humanities. This discipline-specific h-index approach ensures an accurate representation of research influence confined to the relevant academic field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
To establish a reliable and representative ranking, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles were initially identified and examined across all fields of study using a variety of bibliometric data sources. Within the domain of Social Sciences and Humanities specifically, 3,779 scientists were carefully analyzed.
In order to qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 30, and the majority of their tier-level publications needed to fall within the Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines. Additionally, a candidate’s awards and notable achievements in these fields were also considered to reinforce the rigour of the selection process.
The threshold for the D-index is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading researchers are incorporated in the list. Furthermore, to guarantee disciplinary focus, the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index was required to be 30% or less.
Verification and Validation Practices
The research team behind this ranking is acutely aware that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output or impact. Accordingly, each scientist’s profile was manually verified and cross-checked against a wide spectrum of trustworthy publication records and authoritative sources to ensure accuracy and integrity.
While a researcher’s number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence their position in the Research.com ranking, such publication metrics are recognized as valuable secondary indicators of contribution to a specific area of science.
The ranking’s foundational metric, the D-index, is calculated from data gathered primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the scientific community.
