Data Sources and Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Ireland Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and widely respected scholarly metadata repositories available today. In addition to these, multiple other bibliometric data sources were utilized to ensure a robust and inclusive dataset. The citation-based metrics underlying the ranking were compiled and finalized on January 12, 2026, reflecting the most current and comprehensive data available at that time.
A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by the D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that accounts solely for publications and citations within the specific discipline of Medicine. This focus on discipline-specific contributions ensures a meaningful assessment of research impact relevant to the particular field under consideration.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking examined 188,153 scientist profiles across all disciplines identified from a variety of bibliometric data sources. From this extensive dataset, 53 scientists specializing in Medicine in Ireland were identified for inclusion. To qualify for the ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to be at least 70, and a majority of their top-tier publications were required to concentrate on the field of Medicine. In addition to bibliometric metrics, notable awards and achievements within Medicine were considered to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of scientific excellence.
The threshold for the D-index is dynamically set in increments of 10, based on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach both maintains rigorous standards and ensures that the top 1% of leading researchers within Medicine are included. Furthermore, to ensure alignment between a researcher’s overall impact and discipline-specific contributions, the permissible discrepancy between the general H-index and the D-index is kept within 30% or less.
Verification and Quality Assurance
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot perfectly capture the multifaceted contributions of researchers, the Research.com team conducted manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications indexed in a wide spectrum of reliable and authoritative sources to validate accuracy and relevance.
While a researcher’s ranking is primarily established based on their D-index derived from data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the number of papers published in leading journals and prestigious conference proceedings serves as an important secondary indicator of scientific influence and contribution within Medicine. These additional signals support the credibility and depth of the ranking, even though they are not direct weighting factors in the final position.
