Sources of Data and Bibliometric Collection
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Spain Ranking was primarily developed using data from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most comprehensive and respected bibliometric databases available to the research community. These sources were complemented by multiple other data sources to ensure breadth and accuracy in capturing scientific output. Bibliometric data for devising the citation-based metrics utilized in this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A researcher’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), which specifically evaluates papers and citation metrics strictly within the examined discipline of Medicine. This discipline-focused approach ensures that the assessment reflects true impact and expertise in the targeted field.
Scope of Research and Evaluation Criteria
The ranking examines a total of 188,153 scientist profiles identified through an extensive aggregation of bibliometric data sources spanning all scientific disciplines. Within Medicine specifically, 289 scientists were thoroughly evaluated. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist's D-index must be at least 70, and a majority of their tier publications must fall within the area of Medicine. Additionally, awards and notable achievements in Medicine were taken into consideration as supplementary indicators of scholarly distinction.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers is set with increments of 10 reflecting the estimated size of the scholar population within each discipline, while ensuring that the top 1% of leading scholars in the field are consistently incorporated. Moreover, the ranking methodology requires that the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their Medicine-specific D-index does not exceed 30%, thereby ensuring close alignment between overall impact and discipline-focused impact.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the team behind this ranking conducted comprehensive manual verification of all scientist profiles. Profiles were rigorously cross-correlated against publications indexed in a wide range of trustworthy academic sources to confirm accuracy and authenticity. While not directly influencing the researcher’s rank, the number of papers published in prominent journals and prestigious conference proceedings was utilized as a valuable secondary signal of a scientist’s contribution to the field of Medicine.
The final ranking position is firmly grounded in each researcher’s D-index, calculated from data aggregated mainly from OpenAlex and CrossRef — the foremost bibliometric resources available.
