Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Korea Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data obtained from leading scholarly databases, including OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reliable data sources. The bibliometric data used to compute citation-based metrics underpinning the ranking were collected as of January 12, 2026. Each scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their Discipline H-index, or D-index, which selectively incorporates only those papers and citations pertinent to the examined discipline of Medicine. This nuanced metric ensures that the evaluation accurately reflects an individual’s scholarly impact within their specific area of expertise.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
To establish a robust and representative ranking, a total of 188,153 scientist profiles were analyzed across all scientific disciplines. Within this dataset, 95 scientists specializing in Medicine were specifically examined. Qualification for inclusion in the Medicine ranking required a minimum D-index of 70, with the majority of an individual’s tier publications concentrated in the field of Medicine. Additionally, awards and notable achievements relevant to the discipline were factored into the selection process.
The threshold for the D-index is calibrated in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading experts are incorporated into the list. To maintain discipline-specific relevance, the D-index and a scientist’s overall H-index must not differ by more than 30%, reinforcing the focus on significant contribution within Medicine.
Verification Procedures and Methodological Rigor
Understanding that raw bibliometric data alone cannot provide a definitive evaluation of scholarly impact, the Research.com team undertook meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. Profiles were cross-correlated with publications indexed in a wide array of trustworthy sources to validate accuracy. While the volume of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s rank, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of scholarly contribution within a specific scientific domain.
The ranking positions are ultimately determined by each scientist’s D-index, calculated from data sourced primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
