Overview
Temple University, also known as TU, is a research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Being a state-related university, it receives funds from the state and is subject to appropriations. However, it is operated independently.
Founded in 1884 by Russel Conwell, a Baptist minister, it started as a tutoring space for working-class people at night. Conwell himself tutored these students in his Baptist Temple. This is where the name comes from. Known before as the Temple College of Philadelphia, it was incorporated as a university in 1907.
Today, the University is known for being one of the largest providers of professional education in podiatry, pharmacy, law, architecture, engineering, and dentistry. It is responsible for preparing the largest body of professionals in the state of Philadelphia.
Its main campus is located in North Philadelphia just 1.5 miles north of Center City. Other campuses are spread across the city like the Health Sciences Campus and the Ambler Campus. Temple University also operates international campuses. Its Temple University Japan Campus is located in Setagaya, Tokyo while Temple University Rome is in Villa Caproni north of the famous Piazza del Popolo.
Temple University houses famous research centers and institutes. These institutions provide students and faculty with the chance to be a part of multidisciplinary research efforts. They are encouraged to engage in scholarship in various subject areas. Temple’s list of centers includes the Center of Asian Health, Center for Network Computing, Center for Obesity Research and Education, and the Data Science Institute.
The university has 17 schools and colleges. These include the famous Fox School of Business, Boyer College of Music and Dance, the School of Theater, Film, and Media Arts, and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine. Each provides students and faculty with both learning and research opportunities.
Temple is known for its athletics as well. The Temple Owls have 19 varsity teams, including both men’s and women’s sporting teams. It is a full member of the American Athletic Conference. To date, the Owls have eight national championships under its belt. Moreover, the teams play in top venues around the area. These include the famed Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Famous Temple alumni include Ben Goertzel, the artificial intelligence researcher, Diplo, the DJ and producer, Bill Cosby, and Larry Miller, the president of Jordan Brand.
