Data Sources and Ranking Metrics
The 12th edition of the Research.com Best Computer Science Scientists in Belgium Ranking is primarily based on bibliometric data collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources. The citation-based metrics used to devise the ranking were harvested on January 12, 2026, ensuring up-to-date and relevant information. Each scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized bibliometric indicator that includes only publications and citation metrics pertinent to the examined discipline of Computer Science.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
This ranking comprehensively examined 279,971 scientist profiles from diverse bibliometric sources across all academic disciplines, focussing specifically on 130 scientists within the field of Computer Science. To qualify for inclusion, a scientist's D-index had to be at least 30, and a majority of their tier publications were required to be in Computer Science. Additionally, a scientist's awards and achievements within the field were factored in to ensure recognition beyond bibliometric data alone.
The threshold of the D-index for considering top researchers is calibrated in increments of 10, corresponding to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This approach guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars in the field are incorporated into the list. Moreover, candidates were required to demonstrate a proximity of 30% or less between their general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index, ensuring consistency and relevance within their primary area of expertise.
Verification Practices and Methodology Transparency
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the qualitative nuances of scholarly output, the researchers behind this ranking undertook extensive manual verification. Each scientist’s profile was cross-checked against publications listed in a broad array of trustworthy sources to ensure accuracy and validity. While the volume of papers published in premier journals and high-impact conference proceedings is not a direct metric affecting a researcher’s position, it is acknowledged as a valuable secondary signal of their contribution to the field.
The final ranking positions are established by applying the D-index metric grounded in data from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the two most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the research community. We encourage readers to consult our methodology page for a detailed explanation of the processes and criteria used in this ranking.
