Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is a private French-speaking university located in Brussels, Belgium. Translated in English as the Free University of Belgium, it is founded on the attitude and concept of “free inquiry.” As such, it aims to produce thinkers who are committed to keeping their freedom of conscience. The university fulfills this mission by developing students’ critical thinking skills and encouraging them to feed their inquisitiveness by engaging in lively conversations and even debates.
ULB is one of the two academic institutions that originated from the Free University of Brussels, which was founded in 1834 by a group of intellectuals who also happened to be Freemasons. When the state of Belgium was formed after its nine provinces became independent from the Kingdom of Netherlands, it did not have a university in the newly established capital, Brussels. As the government would not spend on the development of another state university, the Freemasons led by Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen, initiated the creation of a private university, which was allowed by the Belgian Constitution. The Free University of Belgium (Université Libre de Belgique) opened on November 20, 1834, and officially adopted the name Université libre de Bruxelles in 1836.
Today, the Université libre de Bruxelles is composed of 12 faculties, including the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, Faculty of Law and Criminology, Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, and Faculty of Medicine. These faculties closely combine academic and research principles.
As a French-speaking institution, ULB’s courses and programs are mostly delivered in French. However, to further internationalization, it now offers a growing number of master’s degree programs taught in English. Consequently, it also provides French language courses to help international students improve their French speaking and writing skills. In all, ULB offers 40 undergraduate and 250 graduate programs, 23 of which are master’s degrees taught exclusively in English. It also partners with 20 doctoral schools.
The university maintains a multicultural and international stature. A third of its students and researchers are from other countries, which is also representative of Brussels as a cosmopolitan city. With a free and outward-looking position, the university was able to secure a number of collaborations, agreements, and partnerships with some of the world’s leading universities, such as the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of California Berkeley, and Universidade de Sao Paulo, to name a few. These partnerships have led to cooperative activities in terms of both academic and research.
The Université libre de Bruxelles is affiliated with four Nobel laureates in science, three Wolf Prize awardees, and one Fields Medal awardee. ULB has also received several distinctions, including the HR Excellence in Research Award.
