A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only those papers and citation counts relevant to the examined discipline—in this case, Microbiology. This approach ensures that the ranking accurately reflects a researcher’s scientific contributions within their specific field rather than their overall citation record.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
To establish a meaningful and authoritative ranking, a total of 187,659 scientist profiles spanning all disciplines were exhaustively analyzed from a broad range of bibliometric data sources. Specifically for Microbiology, 136 scientists were identified and examined thoroughly.
In order to qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to be at least 40. Additionally, a majority of the researcher’s tier publications needed to be focused in the area of Microbiology. Beyond bibliometric data, scientists' awards and achievements within the field were also taken into account as part of the qualification process.
The threshold for D-index consideration is calibrated as an increment of 10, corresponding to the total number of scholars estimated within each discipline. This ensures that the top 1% of leading scholars in each field are consistently represented in the list. An important methodological safeguard is that the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index must be 30% or less, reinforcing that their research output is substantively focused within the discipline.
Verification Practices and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data should never be treated as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the team behind this ranking implemented additional verification practices. All scientist profiles were manually reviewed and cross-correlated with publications listed in a wide range of trustworthy and vetted sources. This meticulous manual validation provides a crucial layer of quality assurance beyond automated data aggregation.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor in determining rank position, it is considered a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s substantive contribution to the field. The fundamental ranking position is established exclusively through each researcher’s D-index, utilizing high-quality data from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which remain two of the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the research community.
