Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Biology and Biochemistry Scientists in Korea Ranking was developed primarily using bibliometric data derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef, alongside multiple other trusted data sources. These platforms represent the most prominent and respected bibliometric databases currently available to the research community. All citation-based metrics used in the ranking were collected and compiled on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined based on their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively includes papers and citation counts within the specific discipline under examination, thereby ensuring domain-relevant impact assessment.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking process involved a comprehensive examination of 188,046 scientist profiles aggregated from various bibliometric data sources spanning all academic disciplines. Specifically, within the field of Biology and Biochemistry, 229 scientists were rigorously evaluated. To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 40, with a majority of their tier publications situated within Biology and Biochemistry. Additionally, researchers’ awards and tangible achievements in the discipline were factored into the evaluation.
The D-index threshold for consideration is adjusted in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars per discipline, while ensuring inclusion of the top 1% of leading researchers. Furthermore, there is a deliberate constraint whereby the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index does not exceed 30%, reinforcing the focus on specialized scholarly impact.
Verification Practices and Methodology Transparency
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the researchers responsible for this ranking have conducted meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles. This verification process included cross-correlation of publication records against a broad spectrum of reliable sources to maintain accuracy and integrity.
While not influencing the ranking position directly, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is regarded as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist's contribution within Biology and Biochemistry. The primary metric determining rank—each researcher’s D-index—is derived from data curated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, databases well recognized for their comprehensive and authoritative coverage.
