A researcher's position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric which considers only those papers and citation counts pertinent to the specific discipline under evaluation—in this case, Neuroscience. This approach ensures that the ranking reflects disciplinary excellence rather than a researcher’s overall academic impact across multiple fields.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
The ranking’s scope involved the examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from various bibliometric databases spanning all academic disciplines. Within this dataset, 359 scientists with an identifiable focus in Neuroscience were specifically evaluated. To qualify for inclusion within the Neuroscience ranking, each scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 30, with a majority of their tier publications concentrated in the field of Neuroscience. Beyond citation metrics, a researcher’s awards and notable achievements within Neuroscience were also integral factors in the evaluation process.
The threshold for the D-index is not arbitrary but scaled by increments of 10 depending on the estimated total number of scholars per discipline. This methodology ensures the top 1% of leading specialists in each field are represented. Additionally, a proximity criterion mandates that the difference between a scientist's general H-index and their D-index remains at 30% or less, affirming a strong alignment between overall academic performance and disciplinary focus.

Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture a scholar’s research impact, the Research.com team implemented additional verification steps to ensure accuracy and credibility. All scientist profiles were manually reviewed and meticulously cross-correlated against publications from a broad spectrum of trustworthy sources. This rigorous manual verification helps safeguard against errors or discrepancies inherent in automated data collection.
While the number of publications in prestigious journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor in determining the ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contributions within their research area. Ultimately, the ranking positions are established based on each researcher's D-index calculated from OpenAlex and CrossRef data—two of the most prominent and widely trusted bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
