The 1st edition of Research.com ranking of the best scientists in the
arena of Microbiology is based on data
combined from multiple data sources including OpenAlex and
CrossRef. The bibliometric data for estimating the citation-based metrics were
gathered on 06-12-2021. Position in the ranking is based on a
scientist's D-index (Discipline H-index), which
includes exclusively papers and citation
values for an examined discipline.

The scope of our Microbiology research
Our best scholars ranking is a reliable
lineup of leading researchers from the area of
Microbiology, based on a thorough
analysis of 166,880 scientists determined
from a variety of bibliometric data sources. For the field of
Microbiology, over 5780 scholars were
examined.
What is D-index inclusion threshold for Microbiology
The D-index threshold for accepting a scientist to be
examined is placed at 40 if
most of their publications are in the area of Microbiology. The
approval criteria for researchers to be
considered into the ranking of top researchers are based on the D-index, proportion
of the contributions made within the specific discipline
plus the awards and achievements of the scholars. The
D-index threshold for including top scientists is
set as an increment of 10 depending on the total number of scientists
estimated for each discipline whilst
ensuring that the top 1% of best scholars are
incorporated into the list. We expect a proximity of
30% or less between a scholar’s general H-index and their D-index.
Extra verification methods
Since our main aim is to ensure that only
actual scientists are included in
our ranking we are aware that metrics are never
meant to be an absolute means to evaluate the
work of researchers. This is why
we manually check each profile and cross-correlate it against publications in a
broad range of trustworthy sources. Although it’s not a
metric contributing to a researcher’s position in
the ranking, the number of documents published in
well-known journals and conference proceedings should form a
credible secondary indication of their contribution to research in a
given discipline. Position in the ranking is
determined by each scholar’s D-index
with the help of information collected from OpenAlex and
CrossRef, which are the most trustworthy and well-established bibliometric
databases of this type available to the scientific community. A
comprehensive overview of our research procedures
can be found on our
methodology page.
Our mission
Our objective is to inspire scientists,
entrepreneurs and administrative bodies
worldwide to explore where prominent experts are heading
and to give an opportunity for the entire scientific community to
get to know who the leading experts in specific
areas of study, in different countries, or even within research
institutions are.
