Data Sources for the Ranking
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Microbiology Scientists in Sweden Ranking is based on comprehensive bibliometric data sourced primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other trusted data repositories. Bibliometric data used in compiling the citation-based metrics were collected on January 12, 2026. The ranking methodology employs the D-index (Discipline H-index), a tailored metric that considers only a researcher's publications and citation metrics within the specific discipline of Microbiology. This ensures that the position of each scientist in the ranking reflects their impact and contributions specifically within the field, rather than their overall scholarly output.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
For this ranking, a total of 187,659 scientist profiles across all disciplines were initially examined using a variety of bibliometric data sources. Within this dataset, 101 scientists focusing on Microbiology were identified for detailed assessment. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, each scientist was required to have a minimum D-index of 40, with a majority of their tier publications grounded in Microbiology research. Additionally, notable awards and professional achievements in the field of Microbiology were considered as supplementary indicators of excellence.
The D-index threshold is adjusted in increments of 10 according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach guarantees that the top 1% of leading experts within the area are encompassed in the ranking. Furthermore, to ensure disciplinary focus, candidates were only considered if their general H-index and D-index values exhibited a proximity of 30% or less, thereby minimizing the influence of research activity outside Microbiology.
Additional Verification Practices
We acknowledge that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scientific output or impact. In light of this, all scientist profiles featured in the ranking were manually verified and cross-correlated against a broad array of trustworthy sources, including peer-reviewed publications, prominent journals, and conference proceedings. While such indicators do not directly influence the ranking position, they provide a valuable secondary signal that corroborates the researcher's contributions within Microbiology.
The final ranking positions are established strictly based on each researcher's D-index, calculated from data principally derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef — two of the most reputable and widely used bibliometric databases in the global research community.
