Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Molecular Biology Scientists in Portugal Ranking is grounded in comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple additional reputable data repositories. The citation-based metrics utilized in establishing the rankings were meticulously compiled on January 12, 2026. Each scientist's position in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively considers publications and citation counts pertinent to the examined discipline of Molecular Biology. This targeted approach ensures an accurate representation of a researcher's impact within their specific field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking was developed following a broad and systemic evaluation of 187,969 scientist profiles across all disciplines extracted from an extensive array of bibliometric databases. Within this pool, 5 distinguished scientists specializing in Molecular Biology were identified and assessed. To qualify for inclusion, a scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 40, with the majority of their high-impact publications situated firmly within the Molecular Biology domain. Furthermore, consideration was given to scientists’ notable awards and achievements that underscore their contributions to the field.
The threshold for the D-index is calibrated in increments of 10, adjusted according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This careful scaling guarantees the inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts. Additionally, to ensure disciplinary relevance, the acceptable difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index is maintained at 30% or less, reinforcing the focus on specialized impact.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the quality and scope of a scholar’s output, rigorous manual verification procedures were employed throughout the ranking process. All scientist profiles were carefully cross-checked against publications indexed in a diverse range of trustworthy, authoritative sources to validate accuracy and completeness.
While the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking, it serves as an invaluable secondary indicator of contribution and scholarly influence within Molecular Biology. The final ranking positions are determined exclusively through the D-index extracted from OpenAlex and CrossRef—the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases available to the scientific community.
