A researcher’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized bibliometric metric that exclusively accounts for publications and citation counts within the examined discipline. This approach ensures that the ranking reflects expertise and impact specific to the field of Medicine rather than a researcher’s overall output.
Scope of Research Considered
The ranking evaluated profiles from a total of 188,153 scientists identified across various bibliometric data repositories spanning all disciplines, including 110 scientists specializing specifically in Medicine.
To qualify for inclusion in the Medicine ranking, a researcher’s D-index had to reach a minimum threshold of 70, with a majority of their top-tier publications located within the field of Medicine. Additionally, consideration was given to the scientist’s recognized awards and achievements pertinent to the discipline.
The D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 according to the total estimated number of scholars within each discipline, thereby ensuring that approximately the top 1% of leading researchers are incorporated in the list. Furthermore, to maintain disciplinary relevance, only scientists exhibiting a proximity of 30% or less between their general H-index and their Medicine-specific D-index were considered.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the quality and impact of scholarly output, the team behind the ranking undertook rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-correlated with publications indexed in a broad array of trustworthy databases, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
While the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the Research.com ranking, this metric serves as an informative secondary signal of a scientist’s contribution to their field.
The primary criterion for ranking remains the D-index, as compiled from authoritative sources OpenAlex and CrossRef — among the most prominent and widely respected bibliometric data providers accessible to the research community.
