Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Social Sciences and Humanities Scientists in Germany Ranking primarily utilizes bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple additional reputable data repositories. These platforms offer comprehensive and up-to-date bibliographic and citation information, enabling a rigorous and data-driven approach to ranking. All citation-based metrics incorporated into this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the currency and relevance of the data used.
A scientist’s position in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that includes only those publications and citation counts pertinent to the examined discipline, in this case, Social Sciences and Humanities. This discipline-specific focus allows for a more accurate reflection of scholarly impact within a defined research area.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
The ranking comprehensively examined 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a diverse array of bibliometric data sources spanning all disciplines. Of these, 196 scientists specialized in the Social Sciences and Humanities were specifically analyzed for inclusion. To qualify for the ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a threshold of at least 30, with the majority of their tier publications firmly rooted in Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines. Additionally, awards and recognized achievements in these fields were considered as qualitative indicators of scholarly influence.
The D-index threshold is calibrated dynamically in increments of 10 relative to the total estimated number of scholars within each discipline to ensure proportional representation. Most importantly, this approach guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars are included in the ranking. Furthermore, there is a requirement that the disparity between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index remains within 30% to maintain consistency and relevance to the field.
Additional Verification and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing the limitations inherent in relying solely on raw bibliometric data, the Research.com team has implemented comprehensive manual verification procedures. Each scientist profile was cross-correlated against publications featured in a wide spectrum of trustworthy and authoritative sources to ensure accuracy and validity. While not directly affecting a researcher’s position in the ranking, the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary signal of the researcher’s contribution and influence within their discipline.
Ultimately, ranking positions are established based on each researcher’s D-index derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef – two of the most prominent, well-recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the research community worldwide.
