The ranking methodology is founded on the researcher’s D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively accounts for papers and citations pertinent to the examined discipline—Engineering and Technology in this case. This ensures that each scientist’s position accurately reflects their impact and productivity within the specific research domain.
Scope of Research Considered
An extensive corpus of 279,971 scientist profiles, compiled from a diverse array of bibliometric data sources and spanning all academic disciplines, was initially examined. Within this dataset, 240 scientists specializing specifically in Engineering and Technology were identified and evaluated.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist's D-index had to meet or exceed a threshold of 30. The threshold for the D-index is set in increments of 10, calibrated to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach guarantees that at least the top 1% of leading researchers in the field are represented in the ranking. Additionally, a proximity criterion of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index was applied to ensure consistency and relevance in disciplinary impact.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of a scholar’s output, the Research.com team undertook meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. This process involved cross-correlating publication records against a broad range of trustworthy, external sources to validate author identity and research domain alignment.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings does not directly influence the ranking position, it is considered a valuable secondary signal of a scientist’s contribution to their specific area of research.
The final position in the ranking is established exclusively through the D-index, derived from the comprehensive data aggregated primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These platforms represent the foremost bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
