Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Chemistry Scientists in Portugal Ranking is primarily based on extensive bibliometric data collected from reputable sources such as OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other authoritative data repositories. These sources provided comprehensive and up-to-date citation data, which were systematically gathered on January 12, 2026. The ranking positions of scientists are determined using the Discipline H-index (D-index), a refined bibliometric metric that focuses exclusively on publications and citation patterns within the specific discipline under review—in this case, Chemistry. This approach ensures that the evaluation accurately reflects a researcher's impact and productivity in their core field of expertise.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking's scope encompassed an examination of 279,971 scientist profiles aggregated from diverse bibliometric sources, spanning all academic disciplines globally. Within the Chemistry domain specifically, 151 scientists based in Portugal were analyzed in detail. To qualify for inclusion, a scientist's D-index was required to be at least 40, ensuring a strong disciplinary impact. Additionally, a majority of their tier publications had to pertain directly to Chemistry. Consideration was also given to awards and distinguished achievements within the Chemistry field to further validate scholarly excellence.
The threshold for the D-index to identify top researchers is adjusted in increments of 10, proportional to the total estimated number of scholars in each discipline. This strategy guarantees inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars per field. Moreover, candidates were required to demonstrate a close alignment between their general H-index and D-index, with a maximum difference of 30%, to ensure the ranking reflects a genuinely focused disciplinary influence.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing the limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team has undertaken extensive manual verification for all scientist profiles considered. This process included thorough cross-correlation of publication records with a broad spectrum of trustworthy and authoritative sources to ensure accuracy and reliability of the data.
While the quantity of publications in prestigious journals and conference proceedings does not directly affect the ranking position, such metrics serve as important supplemental indicators, enriching the understanding of a scientist’s contributions within their field. The final ranking is strictly based on each researcher's D-index, as derived from OpenAlex, CrossRef, and allied databases—widely recognized for their comprehensive and dependable bibliometric records.
