Overview

Keio University is a public research university based in Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1858, it is considered as the oldest modern institutions in the country, with more than 10 undergraduate facilities, 14 graduate schools, and 30 research institutes. It serves over 33,000 students and is a member of the Top Global University Project, a project of the Japanese government, which aims to globalize the country's public and private universities.

The university is spread across six campuses in the following locations: Shinanomachi, Mita, Yagami, Hiyoshi, Shonan Fujisawa, and Shiba Kyoritsu. Its roots can be traced back to 1858, when Japanese writer, teacher, and political leader Yukichi Fukuzawa founded the institution to help modernize the country. The university originally served as a school of Western studies before becoming a full-fledged university in 1890. Its earliest university departments were the Faculties of Law, Economics, and Letters.

Over the years, Keio University added more departments and retained its status as one of the best institutions for modern studies in Japan. For its outstanding education and research quality, the university attracts a large number of international students. As part of its international outlook, the university offers several degree courses that use English as the official language of instruction. It also offers a Japanese Language Programme that allows international students to take a deeper study of the Japanese culture.

Keio University is currently divided into 11 faculties—Faculties of Letter, Economics, Law, Business and Commerce, Medicine, Science and Technology, Policy Management, Environment and Information Studies, Nursing and Medical Care, and Pharmacy. Geographically situated across the Greater Tokyo area, the university serves as an exciting place for students to learn, grow, and connect with people from different parts of the world.

Moreover, the university houses plenty of modern and state-of-the-art student facilities. It is also home to one of the largest and most extensive libraries in Japan, which holds a collection of rare Westen texts and books, including the only Gutenberg Bible in Asia and the first volume of Shinsen Tsukuba Shū. In addition, Keio University is affiliated with several media centers, all of which serve information resources for students, researchers, and faculty of the university.

As one of the leading research-intensive universities in Japan, Keio University is actively involved in various research projects covering a wide range of fields. The university has also established partnerships with numerous international research hubs, allowing for advanced, interdisciplinary, and global collaborative research activities.
