For the purposes of this ranking, bibliometric data was collected on January 12, 2026. The position of each institution in the ranking is determined based on the aggregated sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-indexes) of all ranking scholars affiliated with that institution, whose primary publication area lies within the discipline of Law. The D-index is a discipline-specific adaptation of the H-index and incorporates exclusively publications and citation data pertinent to the examined field.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The ranking process involved evaluating 279,971 scientist profiles compiled from diverse bibliometric sources, from which 4,206 scientists specializing in Law were specifically analyzed. To qualify for consideration, each scientist was required to have a minimum D-index threshold of 20, with the majority of their tier publications centered in the field of Law. Additionally, recognition of scholarly awards and achievements in the legal domain was factored into qualification.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This calibration ensures the inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts in the respective discipline. Furthermore, to ensure disciplinary relevance, a proximity criterion was imposed such that the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index shall not exceed 30%.
Verification and Validation Processes
The Research.com team rigorously acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone does not constitute an absolute measure of a scholar’s research output or impact. Accordingly, every scientist profile included in the ranking was manually verified and cross-examined against publications listed in a broad array of trustworthy academic sources.
While the number of publications in renowned journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence the rank positions, it serves as a critical secondary indicator of a researcher's scholarly contribution within a specific scientific domain.
The rankings derive primarily from each researcher’s discipline-specific H-index calculated based on citation and publication records aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef—widely recognized as leading bibliometric databases accessible to the research community.
