University of Georgia or UGA is a public land-grant research university in Athens, Georgia. It was chartered by the state of Georgia in 1785 but was only actually established in 1801 after a land site was selected. One of the oldest public universities in the United States and the flagship of the University System of Georgia, UGA belongs to the top-ranked institutions worldwide with contributions in biology, chemistry, and psychology.

Research centers and institutes at UGA include the Wilson Center for Humanities and Arts, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, River Basin Center, Plant Phenomics and Robotics Center, Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, Center for Vaccines and Immunology, Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases, and the Center for the Study of Global Issues. There are also the Biomedical and Translational Sciences Institute, Owens Institute for Behavioral Research, and the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography.
