A scientist's position in the ranking is derived from their Discipline H-index (D-index), a refined bibliometric indicator that accounts solely for publications and citation metrics within the specific discipline under examination. This approach ensures that the ranking reflects a researcher’s impact in Social Sciences and Humanities specifically, rather than across unrelated fields.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking was constructed from an extensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles aggregated from a variety of bibliometric data sources, spanning all disciplines. Within this broad dataset, 57 scientists who specialize in Social Sciences and Humanities were identified and assessed.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a researcher had to meet the following criteria:
- Possess a D-index of at least 30, ensuring a meaningful level of research impact within the discipline.
- Have the majority of tier publications concentrated in the Social Sciences and Humanities areas.
- Exhibit notable awards and achievements in the Social Sciences and Humanities, which were considered as supplementary indicators of research excellence.
The D-index threshold to identify top researchers is calibrated as increments of 10, relative to the estimated total number of active scholars in each discipline. This methodology guarantees the inclusion of roughly the top 1% of leading scholars across all areas covered. Additionally, a proximity rule is applied whereby the difference between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index remains within 30%, aiding the verification of consistent impact within the discipline.
Verification and Validation Practices
At Research.com, we recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output and impact. Consequently, all scientist profiles were subject to careful manual verification and cross-correlation against publications indexed in a wide range of trustworthy and authoritative sources. This rigorous supplemental validation ensures the integrity and reliability of the ranking.
Although not a direct factor in assigning a researcher’s ranking position, the volume of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings is acknowledged as a valuable secondary signal of contribution and influence within a scientific domain.
The ranking positions are ultimately founded on each scientist’s D-index, as determined from high-quality metadata sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These platforms stand as the most comprehensive and respected bibliometric resources currently accessible to the global research community.
