The bibliometric data used to devise the citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. Each scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only publications and citation data relevant to the specific discipline of Ecology and Evolution. This approach ensures that the ranking reflects domain-specific research impact rather than general scholarly output.
Scope and Criteria of the Ranking
To establish a robust and meaningful ranking, an extensive dataset of 279,971 scientist profiles spanning all academic disciplines was examined. Within this dataset, 216 scientists specializing in Ecology and Evolution were identified and evaluated. Eligibility for inclusion in the ranking required a minimum D-index of 30, accompanied by a majority of the scientist’s tier publications being within Ecology and Evolution. Additionally, professional awards and recognized achievements in the field were factored into eligibility assessments.
The threshold for the D-index is dynamically set in increments of 10, calibrated according to the total number of researchers estimated within each discipline. This method is designed to ensure that the ranking consistently incorporates the top 1% of leading scholars in the field. To maintain discipline specificity, a scientist’s general H-index and D-index were compared, with a required proximity of 30% or less, ensuring that the ranking reflects expertise and impact specifically in Ecology and Evolution.
Verification Practices and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing the limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team undertook meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications indexed in a diverse array of trustworthy and authoritative sources to authenticate accuracy and relevance.
Although not directly influencing the rank position, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings served as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s active contributions to Ecology and Evolution research. The ranking position itself is anchored firmly in the D-index metric, derived from data provided by OpenAlex and CrossRef—widely recognized as the most prominent and reputable bibliometric repositories accessible to the global research community.
