The ranking positions are determined based on each researcher’s D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only the publications and citations relevant to the specific academic discipline under review — in this case, Psychology. This approach ensures that the evaluation accurately reflects a scientist’s scholarly contribution within their specialized field rather than across unrelated disciplines.
Scope of Research and Criteria for Inclusion
Our analysis examined a broad cohort comprising 279,971 scientist profiles identified from diverse bibliometric data sources across all academic disciplines. Within this vast dataset, 17 scientists specializing specifically in Psychology were analyzed in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 30, ensuring that only researchers with significant scholarly influence in Psychology were considered. Additionally, a majority of the tier publications attributed to each candidate had to be focused within the domain of Psychology.
Beyond citation metrics, researchers’ awards and notable achievements relevant to the field of Psychology were also factored into the evaluation process to provide a holistic view of their academic standing. The D-index thresholds are calibrated in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, guaranteeing inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts. Furthermore, to maintain disciplinary specificity, candidates were required to have a disparity of no more than 30% between their overall H-index and their Psychology-specific D-index.
Additional Verification and Validation Processes
Understanding the inherent limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute evaluative tool, the team behind this ranking implemented rigorous manual verification protocols. Each scientist profile was carefully reviewed and cross-referenced against a wide spectrum of authoritative sources to confirm accuracy and prevent misattribution or data anomalies.
While not directly influencing ranking positions, the quantity of papers published in prominent peer-reviewed journals and key conference proceedings is highlighted as a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s sustained contributions within Psychology.
The final ranking positions are decisively determined using the D-index, derived from information aggregated chiefly from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are recognized as the most authoritative and widely utilized bibliometric repositories accessible to the academic community.
