Data Sources and Bibliometric Basis
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Japan Ranking was developed using comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reputable bibliometric databases. These platforms provide extensive and up-to-date coverage of scientific publications and citation records, enabling a robust foundation for evaluating research impact. The citation-based metrics that inform this ranking were compiled on January 12, 2026, ensuring the inclusion of the most recent and relevant data available at the time of assessment. A scientist's position within the ranking is determined using their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that accounts exclusively for publications and citations pertinent to the specific discipline under examination—in this case, Medicine.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The ranking encompasses a broad evaluative scope, beginning with an analysis of 188,153 scientist profiles aggregated from diverse bibliometric sources across all academic disciplines. From this extensive dataset, 645 scientists specializing in Medicine were identified and reviewed in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the Medicine-specific ranking, a researcher was required to demonstrate a D-index of at least 70, with a majority of their tier publications firmly rooted within the field of Medicine. Additionally, consideration was given to notable awards and professional achievements relevant to the discipline.
The threshold for the D-index is calibrated as incremental steps of 10, adjusted according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This method ensures the representation of the top 1% of leading scientists in the field. Furthermore, to maintain disciplinary relevance and precision, only researchers exhibiting a proximity margin of 30% or less between their general H-index and their Medicine-specific D-index were considered, confirming a focused research commitment to the discipline.
Verification and Validation Procedures
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data cannot alone fully capture the scope and quality of scholarly output, the ranking process incorporates rigorous manual verification measures. Each scientist's profile was thoroughly cross-examined against publications confirmed in a broad spectrum of credible academic sources. While the count of papers published in esteemed journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence the D-index or final ranking position, it is regarded as a vital secondary indicator of a researcher's contribution to their scientific domain.
The ranking position itself is derived from the D-index values calculated using data collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and trusted bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
