Our analysis began with an extensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a broad array of bibliometric databases and disciplines. Within this expansive dataset, 44 scientists actively publishing and contributing to Materials Science in Russia were specifically evaluated.
To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, researchers were required to meet a rigorous minimum D-index threshold of 40, ensuring the representation of only highly impactful scholars. Furthermore, the majority of each candidate’s tier-one publications had to be demonstrably within the Materials Science domain, affirming their specialization. Awards and notable achievements in Materials Science were additionally considered as qualitative corroboration of their standing.
The D-index cutoffs for top researchers are calibrated in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars within the discipline. This careful scaling is designed to guarantee inclusion of the top 1% of leading researchers in the field while maintaining a manageable and competitive ranking size. Moreover, to confirm disciplinary focus and relevance, a proximity criterion of 30% or less was applied between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index.
Verification and Validation Procedures
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute indicator of scientific contribution, the Research.com team undertook meticulous manual verification processes. Each scientist’s profile was cross-checked against diverse trustworthy sources to validate publication records and citation counts. Such manual curation helps mitigate risks of data inaccuracies, author misidentification, and disciplinary misclassification.
Although the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly affect a researcher’s rank, it provides a valuable secondary indicator of their active engagement and leadership within the Materials Science community. The primary ranking criterion remains the D-index as derived from reliable databases such as OpenAlex and CrossRef, recognized worldwide for their comprehensive bibliometric coverage.
