All citation-based metrics used to determine the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. The ranking for each scientist is based on their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized metric which considers only the papers and citation metrics pertinent to the discipline under examination—in this case, Environmental Sciences. This approach allows for a more precise evaluation of a researcher’s impact within their specific field.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking scope was defined through an analysis of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from an array of bibliometric data sources encompassing all disciplines. Among these, 4 scientists specializing in Environmental Sciences in Morocco were examined in detail.
To qualify for inclusion, a scientist had to meet the following criteria:
- Possess a D-index of at least 30 in Environmental Sciences.
- Have a majority of their tier publications focused within the Environmental Sciences discipline.
- Demonstrate acknowledged awards and achievements relevant to the field.
The D-index threshold is calibrated in increments of 10 according to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This method ensures that the top 1% of leading scholars in Environmental Sciences are incorporated into the list. Additionally, to affirm the disciplinary focus, a proximity threshold of no greater than 30% between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index was enforced, maintaining fidelity to domain-specific impact.
Additional Verification and Validation Practices
The Research.com team recognizes that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output. With this understanding, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent manual verification and were cross-checked against publications indexed in a broad range of trustworthy academic sources.
While not directly influencing a researcher’s position in the ranking, the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and major conference proceedings was also taken into account as a valuable secondary indicator of scholarly contribution within Environmental Sciences.
The definitive ranking positions are established exclusively through evaluation of each researcher’s D-index, derived from data compiled via OpenAlex and CrossRef. These databases represent the highest standards of bibliometric data availability and rigor currently accessible to the global research community.
