Overview of Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School
Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, officially known as Duke-NUS Medical School, was established in 2005 in Singapore through a partnership between Duke University (USA) and the National University of Singapore. Positioned in the heart of Singapore’s academic and biomedical district, this public, research-intensive institution forms a core component of the country’s biomedical sciences initiative. Although relatively young, Duke-NUS serves around 400 postgraduate and doctoral students, supported by a diverse faculty drawn from Asia and around the globe. Its singular campus co-locates with leading research hospitals and bioclusters, ensuring close integration of research, education, and clinical practice.
Duke-NUS’s primary domain is biomedical science and medicine, delivering Singapore’s only graduate-entry medical degree (MD) and MD/PhD programs. Its hallmark is the adoption of Duke University’s TeamLEAD pedagogy—an innovative, team-based learning approach that emphasizes problem-solving over rote memorization. The school is internationally recognized for translational research in oncology, neuroscience, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, and infectious diseases. Collaborations extend globally, notably with the Duke University School of Medicine, SingHealth institutions, and international academic consortia. Frequently ranked among Asia’s top medical schools, Duke-NUS boasts high research output, including over 1,000 peer-reviewed publications annually and impactful biomedical discoveries.
Duke-NUS fosters a vibrant and multicultural campus experience reflected in diverse student clubs, leadership opportunities, and a dedicated Graduate Student Council. Cultural events, mentorship programs, and community outreach connect students to both the Singaporean society and the global medical community. Comprehensive student support services—including counseling and professional development resources—encourage personal and academic growth. On-campus and partner housing options, as well as modern recreational facilities, nurture a supportive and healthy work-life balance. The institution’s commitment to inclusivity consistently attracts an international cohort, with about 20% of students hailing from outside Singapore.
Driven by its mission to transform medicine and improve lives, Duke-NUS advances innovation, academic excellence, and societal impact. The school is dedicated to cultivating leaders who embody integrity, compassion, and a global mindset, thus shaping the future of medical science and healthcare for Singapore, the region, and beyond.
