Overview

The University of Bologna in Bologna, Italy is the world’s oldest university with contiguous operations that can be traced back to 1088. In fact, it is believed to have introduced the word, “university,” calling its assemblies of students and masters (professors), universitas, during medieval times.

Today, the university is a leading academic and research institution in Italy, ranking consistently among the top 200 universities in the world. It has campuses in Forli, Ravenna, Ceena and Rimini in Italy, plus a satellite branch in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The university is estimated to host over 85,000 students across its campuses.

The University of Bologna has its foundation on canon and civil law, proof of which is its key role in the development of medieval Roman law. Starting around the establishment of universitates scholarium or mutual aid societies of foreign students who sought protection against city laws that punished foreigners for the crimes of their countrymen, the University of Bologna would be granted a charter by 1158, presided by Frederick I Barbarossa of the Holy Roman Empire.

Given its heritage, the university counts among its alumni historical luminaries in science and literature during the Renaissance, including Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, August Righi and Nicolaus Copernicus. It is also home to three popes: Pope Gregory XIII, Pope Gregory XV and Pope Innocent IX. As a modern institution, it graduated Umberto Eco and Enzo Ferrari.

Today, the university follows a general tiered-program with 101 first-level degrees taken for three years, followed by 108 second-level degrees that must be completed in two years. Thereafter, students can pursue a master’s and continue with a doctorate of research.

The academic programs are spread across 11 schools. These include: School of Engineering and Architecture, School of Economics, Management and Statistics, School of Sciences,
School of Medicine and Surgery and School of Foreign Languages and Literature, Interpretation and Translation. The faculty is clustered as departments in architecture, arts, modern languages, literature and culture and management, among others.

The University of Bologna today is a recipient of major funding, including support from the European Union, the Italian Ministry of University and Research and the Emilia-Romagna region. Its library system boasts of access to 50,000 online journals, 753 databases, and 400,000 e-books.
