Overview

KTH (Swedish: Kungliga Tekniska högskolan) Royal Institute of Technology is a public research university located in Stockholm, Sweden. Established in 1827, KTH is one of the leading technical and engineering universities in Europe, and it is Sweden’s largest institution for technical research.

The academic programs of KTH can be found under five schools. These are the School of Architecture and the Built Environment, School of Engineering Sciences, School of Industrial Engineering and Management, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and the School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health.

There are bachelor's, master’s, and doctorate programs available, such as Architecture, Real Estate and Construction Management, Transport, Mobility and Innovation, and Sustainable Technology. The main medium of instruction used for undergraduate programs is Swedish, while graduate and doctorate programs are mainly taught in English. KTH offers Swedish language courses for those who also want to learn the language.

For graduate studies, the university has more than 60 programs being taught in English, 16 of which are in cooperation with other renowned universities in Europe. Examples of master’s programs include Nuclear Energy Engineering, Energy for Smart Cities, Information and Network Engineering, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management.

For doctoral studies, KTH issues degrees for two programs: Doctor of Philosophy and Licentiate of Engineering. The university may also offer PhD/doctoral student positions through scholarships or joint programs. For example, the doctoral program for medical technology is being offered in partnership with Karolinska Institutet (KI). Students participating in this type of program can have either KTH or KI as their home university and work with professors and staff from both institutions.

KTH has its roots in The School of Mechanics, which later became the Technological Institute (Teknologiska institutet) in 1827. The school had one professor in chemistry and physics and one class each for mechanical engineering and chemical engineering.

In 1877, Technological Institute changed its name to the current Kungliga Tekniska högskolan (KTH) and is now home to a third of Sweden’s engineering and research education. The list of notable alumni from KTH is long and impressive, from Skype co-founder, Niklas Zennström to physicist and first Swedish man in space, Christer Fuglesang, co-founder of Volvo, Gustaf Larson, and chief executive of Reed Elsevier, Erik Engstrom.

The European Commission awarded the title “European University” to KTH. The university has also formed the alliance UNITE! or University Network for Innovation, Technology and Engineering, which aims to create a trans-European campus to improve cooperation and knowledge transfer among member universities.
