Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Universities in the World Ranking is primarily derived from bibliometric data collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reliable data sources. The bibliometric data used to calculate citation-based metrics were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring up-to-date and comprehensive information.
A university’s position in this ranking is determined by the sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking scholars affiliated with the institution, where each scholar’s primary publication area is Medicine. The D-index is a discipline-specific metric, including exclusively publications and citation data relevant to Medicine, thereby accurately reflecting the impact and productivity within the examined discipline.
Scope of Research Covered
A total of 312,461 scientist profiles were initially examined from various bibliometric data sources, of which 72,655 scientists specializing in Medicine were analyzed in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, researchers needed to meet a D-index threshold of 70, with a majority of their tier publications focused in Medicine. Additionally, a scientist’s awards and achievements in the field of Medicine were important factors considered in the evaluation process.
The D-index threshold for top researchers is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading scientists are included in the analysis. Furthermore, we maintained a proximity criterion whereby the difference between a scientist’s overall H-index and their Medicine-specific D-index does not exceed 30%, reinforcing discipline relevance.
Verification and Data Integrity
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot definitively evaluate scholarly output, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent manual verification. This process involved cross-correlation against publications indexed in a broad spectrum of trustworthy sources to validate accuracy and relevancy.
While not directly contributing to ranking positions, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is acknowledged as a valuable secondary measure of scientific contribution within a specific area of Medicine.
The final researcher rankings rely on the H-index calculated from data aggregated through OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the research community.
