Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Political Science Scientists in United Kingdom Ranking is founded on robust and comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reputable data providers. The citation-based metrics that underpin the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the currency and relevance of the data pool. Each scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively includes publications and citation counts pertaining to the examined discipline—Political Science in this case—thus providing a focused assessment of disciplinary impact.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking evaluation encompassed a total of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from diverse bibliometric databases spanning all academic disciplines. For the specific field of Political Science, 315 scientist profiles were analyzed in-depth. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a researcher’s D-index was required to meet a minimum threshold of 20, and the majority of their key publications had to be within the Political Science domain. Additional consideration was given to notable awards and achievements pertinent to Political Science.
The threshold for the D-index is calibrated in increments of 10, relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, thereby securing representation of the top 1% of leading researchers in the field. Furthermore, the methodology mandates that the disparity between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index does not exceed 30%, ensuring the alignment of general scholarly impact with discipline-specific expertise.
Verification and Validation Procedures
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data cannot singularly capture the depth of a scholar's contributions, the ranking process incorporates meticulous manual verification of all researcher profiles. This includes comprehensive cross-correlation against a wide spectrum of trusted publication sources. Although not directly influencing the D-index or ranking placement, the volume of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings serves as an additional indicator of a scientist’s substantive engagement and influence within their field.
The ranking positions are ultimately established through the calculated D-index derived from data aggregated via OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent, well-established bibliometric repositories recognized by the global research community.
