A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined bibliometric metric that considers only papers and citations relevant to the specific discipline under evaluation, in this case, Medicine. This discipline-focused approach enables a more precise and relevant assessment of scholarly impact within Medicine, avoiding conflation with achievements outside the field.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
The ranking is based on a thorough examination of 188,153 scientist profiles aggregated from a variety of bibliometric databases and sources across all scientific disciplines. For the Medicine-specific evaluation, 48 scientists from Singapore were identified and scrutinized rigorously.
To qualify for inclusion in the Medicine ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 70, ensuring only highly influential researchers were considered. Furthermore, a majority of a qualifying scientist’s tier publications needed to be within the Medical field, establishing domain relevance as a key qualifier. Awards and significant achievements in Medicine were also factored in, supporting a holistic evaluation of scientific standing.
The D-index threshold is dynamically set in increments of 10 relative to the size of the scholar population in each discipline to accurately reflect top-tier excellence while guaranteeing inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars within the ranking. Additionally, to maintain disciplinary focus, each scientist's general H-index and Medicine-specific D-index must be within 30% proximity, ensuring consistent representation of expertise.
Verification Practices and Methodological Integrity
Recognizing the inherent limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the ranking team conducts meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile is cross-correlated against publications listed in a wide variety of reputable sources to confirm authenticity and relevance.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence the ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary signal reflecting a scientist’s overall contribution to advancing research in Medicine. The fundamental position in the ranking is established via the D-index, calculated using the rigorously curated bibliometric data derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef, ensuring both accuracy and transparency.
