Data Sources and Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Estonia Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources. The citation-based metrics used to devise the ranking were gathered on January 12, 2026. A scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized metric that exclusively considers publications and citation performance within the specific discipline of Medicine. This approach ensures that the ranking is reflective of a researcher’s impact and productivity in the examined field alone.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking examined a total of 188,153 scientist profiles identified from a broad array of bibliometric databases spanning all academic disciplines. Within this dataset, 2,482 scientists were specifically identified within the discipline of Medicine. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 70, with a majority of their tier publications focused in Medicine. Additionally, consideration was given to a scientist’s awards and achievements relevant to the medical field.
The D-index threshold is calibrated in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This dynamic threshold setting ensures inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars, maintaining a rigorous and fair selection process. Furthermore, a maximum proximity of 30% is maintained between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index to guarantee consistency and relevance of disciplinary impact.
Verification and Validation Practices
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output. Accordingly, all scientist profiles included in the ranking were manually verified and cross-correlated against publications listed in a wide range of trustworthy sources. While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking position, it represents a valuable secondary indicator of their contributions to their specific scientific area.
Positions within the ranking are ultimately determined using each researcher’s D-index, computed from data harvested from OpenAlex and CrossRef—the foremost and most trusted bibliometric databases accessible to the research community.
