All citation-based metrics used in devising this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A researcher’s position is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively considers papers and citations relevant to the specific discipline under examination—in this case, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. This approach ensures that each scientist’s standing is accurately reflective of their discipline-specific research impact.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The ranking process began with the examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from various bibliometric data sources, encompassing all scientific disciplines. Within this comprehensive dataset, 43 scientists were categorized specifically under Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 30, and the majority of their tier publications needed to be within the realm of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Furthermore, scientists’ recognized awards and achievements in this field were considered as supplementary indicators of their expertise and contribution.
The D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted by increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, while ensuring inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts. An additional criterion requires that the disparity between a scientist's overall H-index and their D-index remain within 30%, guaranteeing a strong alignment between their general research impact and their discipline-specific output.
Additional Verification Practices
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw bibliometric data cannot serve as an absolute measure of a scholar’s research output. In recognition of the nuances inherent in research evaluation, all scientist profiles were manually verified and cross-referenced against publications indexed in a broad array of trusted sources. This rigorous validation process enhances the reliability and credibility of the ranking.
Although not directly influencing a researcher’s ranking position, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is considered an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s contributions to their field.
Each researcher’s ranking is ultimately established on their D-index, derived from verified data mainly sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef. For detailed information on the methodologies employed in creating this ranking, we invite readers to visit our methodology page.
