Data Sources and Metric Collection
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Law Scientists in China Ranking is primarily derived from comprehensive bibliometric data collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef, augmented by multiple other trusted data sources. These platforms represent some of the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases available to the research community. The data underpinning the citation-based metrics utilized in this ranking were systematically collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring a current and robust dataset. A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined based on their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively incorporates papers and citation data pertaining to the specific discipline under examination—in this case, Law.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking’s foundational dataset includes 279,971 scientist profiles examined across all academic disciplines, with a focused analysis of 1,114 scientists specifically identified within the field of Law. To qualify for inclusion in the Law ranking, candidates were required to have a D-index of at least 20. Furthermore, a majority of their tier publications had to be concentrated in the area of Law to ensure disciplinary relevance. Consideration was also given to awards and notable achievements within the legal domain.
The D-index threshold for recognizing top researchers is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10, corresponding to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach guarantees the inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars in the respective fields. An additional qualifying criterion mandates that the proximity between a scientist’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index does not exceed 30%, ensuring a strong alignment between their general impact and disciplinary expertise.
Verification Practices and Ranking Methodology
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data are not definitive tools for evaluating scholarly output, the Research.com team implemented rigorous verification procedures. All scientist profiles included in the ranking were manually verified and cross-correlated against publications documented in a broad array of reputable sources. This meticulous validation enhances the accuracy and credibility of the ranking.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not directly factored into the researcher’s ranking position, it remains an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to research within their specific discipline. The ranking is ultimately established using each researcher’s D-index calculated from data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef.
