Data Sources and Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Ecology and Evolution Scientists in Mexico Ranking is constructed predominantly on bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, along with multiple other reputable datasets. The citation-based metrics foundational to this ranking were compiled on January 12, 2026, ensuring the inclusion of the most current and comprehensive data available. Each scientist's position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that accounts exclusively for papers and citation data pertinent to the specific discipline of Ecology and Evolution. This approach enables a focused and discipline-specific evaluation of scholarly impact.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking process examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a wide spectrum of bibliometric databases encompassing multiple disciplines. Within this broad pool, 39 scientists specializing in Ecology and Evolution were identified and evaluated. To qualify for inclusion in the Ecology and Evolution ranking, researchers were required to have a D-index of at least 30, with the majority of their tier publications directly related to Ecology and Evolution. Additionally, recognition through significant awards and achievements in the field was factored into the selection process. The threshold D-index is adjusted in increments of 10, tailored to the estimated number of scholars in each discipline to ensure that the top 1% of leading experts are represented. Furthermore, a criterion was implemented to ensure a proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index, reinforcing the relevance and specificity of their impact within Ecology and Evolution.
Verification Practices and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot provide a definitive evaluation of scholarly contributions, the Research.com team undertook rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles. This involved cross-correlating publication records against a diverse array of authoritative sources to validate accuracy and reliability. Although not directly influencing the ranking position, the number of publications in prestigious journals and conference proceedings serves as an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to their field. The final rankings were established using each researcher's D-index derived from data gathered through OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most respected and widely utilized bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
